I love rap for the same reasons I love Flannery O’Connor—the beauty of the Baroque Catholic sensibilities are perfectly expressed in Southern and African American culture.
O’Connor once wrote that to the hard of hearing, you have to shout to be heard. Hip hop is a great shout—raw, real, vulnerable, saturated with passion and powerful communication. At its best it’s the most eloquent worship. Few forms of art have helped me connect with the person of Jesus Christ like rap.
The spirituality of rap is a perfect declaration of Christ on the cross: the suffering and coming triumph of our Lord. And few rap artists are as brilliant in painting a picture of a living Christian faith as Kendrick Lamar.
Join us in this deep dive of Lamar’s album, Good Kid, m.A.A.d City, and why it’s so Catholic!
