This video analyzes a recent New York Times article on “mankeeping,” which is essentially a complaint about the efforts that wives make towards meeting the emotional needs of their husbands. This article is part of a trend happening for many decades in popular culture—encouraging people to see their marriage and family relationships as burdens to resent and avoid. No doubt it’s hard work to love another human being, but this labor is the greatest joy of life, with its roots planted first and foremost in love of God. But since nearly all of our public discourse takes God out of the picture, what we have left is a discouragement of gratitude, joy, appreciation, and a generous attitude towards our loved ones. In this video I break down the Marxist sources of this spirit of negativity about marriage, and offer three ways to speak back against it with Biblical truth and examples from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This project was a delight to make, and I hope it offers great information to help us all keep joy and grace flowing freely in our homes!
